A recent case demonstrates that if an employee moves firms and takes your customer data along too, there is a less expensive option than relying on civil remedies.

L worked for Acorn Waste Management Limited. When leaving his employment with Acorn, L sent contact information for more than 900 clients to his own email account for use in his new job.

On 26 May in Telford Magistrates' Court, L pleaded guilty to unlawfully obtaining personal data contrary to the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998.

The case demonstrates that as well as relying on civil remedies when employee’s take confidential information, complaints to the Information Commissioner's Office may be just as effective and less expensive.
