Devised by former Olympic medallist, Brendan Foster and now in its 33rd year, the Great North Run leaves Newcastle across the Tyne Bridge. It finishes 13.1 miles later by the coast at South Shields, taking in the odd hill en route.
Sarah Rushton, Alexandra Bartrope and Paul Woodward are joining 56,000 runners at the starting line next Sunday, September 15. Sarah is raising money for children’s cancer charity, Clic Sargent, Alexandra for Pancreatic Cancer UK and Paul for Diabetes UK.
As a seasoned runner, Alexandra is expected to make the finish well ahead of the novelty fancy dress gangs. However, having trained in and around Hampstead Heath since moving to London in May, she has some reservations about her readiness for what Paul describes as a 12 mile slog uphill which follows the short downhill section at the start. Sarah imagines she will be bringing up the rear along with ‘the man with a fridge on his back’.
We wish them all luck and a great race. If you would like to support them, the links are below:
